Breed of horse #2 The Arabian
Arabians are my absolute favourite breed of horse...I love all horses really, but Arabians are the best! (in my opinion :) Arabs, are considered to be the oldest captive breed of horse around, dating form approximately 2500BC. Although the early "prototypes" of this breed, were smaller than the modern Arabs, they have remained relatively unchanged, due to the careful stud records and breeding programs in Arabia.
They first originated in Arabia, with other Middle Eastern roots, and were quickly adored by many North Americans, and is the most popular horse breed in the world with over 939 breeding organizations. The second is the QH. Arabians are best known for their intelligence, and their playful personalities.
Arabians are most recognized by their unique tail. The have the ability to hold their tail almost vertically, for as long as they want, or for as long as they are hyper. This is due to the immense amount of small muscles that are around the base of a horses tail. These muscles are considerably stronger than in other breeds of horse. Another characteristic of the breed, is their slightly concave or "dished" face. They also have predominate ridges over their eyes. Arabians also have two less vertebrae. Oe less Lumbar, and one less Thoracic vertebrae, resulting in one less pair of ribs. (The Thoracic vertebrae, connect to the ribs.) Because of this unique design, the shorter the Arab, the more weight they can take, (theoretically of course! Don't try to squash him!)
Colours! The Pure bred Arabian is registered to have almost any horse colour, except, Dun, Pinto, Buckskin, and Palomino and variations there upon. If you own a palomino Arab, it is not a pure bred. Grey is the most common, with Black being the least common. All Arabians have black skin, except underneath white markings and Albinos.
In Arabia, the breeders are able to distinguish certain groups of Arabians from others. (i.e. group 1 originated here and group two is from there) Arabians have contributed to the creation of many common horse breeds today, such as: Thoroughbred, National show horse, and the list seems to go on forever!
Photos! *note NONE of these are mine, and I have provided their url's below each.
